Although the main function of masonry cladding is decorative, the crucial choice of the right material should be the prime concern. The use of sealants, Portland Cement-based mortar and other “modern” materials lacking vapor exchange qualities will trap water in even the best masonry, with negative consequences ranging from staining to chemical reactions such as those resulting from sulfate or alkali attacks. This may result not only in unsightly effects but also lead to the degradation of the best masonry. The use of a time-proven mortar like Natural Hydraulic Lime, known for its chemical resistance and neutrality as well as elasticity and breathability, should remain the prime choice for the specifier and installer.
