Preserving the historical integrity of a building while keeping in mind its safety and usefulness is a prime concern in restoration and preservation work. Regardless of the reason for repair, appropriate restoration techniques will always benefit the long-term care of masonry structures. Pointing is a procedure requiring skills that are learned only through experience. However, having an understanding of the qualities of the pointing mortars will be critical for the future life and preservation of the building. Repointing mortars should be soft and flexible, not hard and rigid, and always weaker than the host masonry. The vapor exchange qualities, as well as the chemical composition and reactivity, are the principle considerations when choosing a mortar. NHL mortar will allow the specifier, or user, to design a mortar mix that will satisfy all these constraints.
